The pope made his announcement in Latin this morning at a small event "Concistory for the canonization of the martyrs of Otranto".He says after examining his conscience “before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are longer suited to an adequate exercise”.
The chief communication adviser Greg Burke, to the Vatican
said the actual resignation date will be February 28.
The pope’s decision to step down is as a result of continues
failing health.He is the first Pope to retire from service in six centuries.
