CAMEROON PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS 2011 - PAUL BIYA TO SEEK RE-ELECTION

78 YEAR OLD PAUL BIYA

Presidential elections are to take place in Cameroon on October 9,2011 according to a recent decree by the president.

The central African state of Cameroon is currently being run by Paul Biya since 1982 following the shock resignation of the country’s first post colonial president Ahmadu Ahidjo.

Paul Biya (a southerner from Mvomeka, near Yaoundé) has repeatedly changed the constitution to pave the way for him to run for re- election as many times as he wishes.

At the ripe old age of 78, he will be running for another 7year term in office come October 9.

Although he has not yet “officially” announced his candidacy; a spokes person for the president – Jacques Fame Ndongo-already announced the incumbent president will be running.

The president’s party is to hold a conference next month to rubber stamp his candidacy.

Some opposition groups are calling on the president to step down and take a well deserved rest. But that is unlikely to happen.

MRS BIYA REPRESENTING MR BIYA
Most Cameroonians see their country as effectively run by the president’s wife –Chantal Biya-who often represents him at most state occasions.
